• Artwork Focus: A Clock Filled With Meaning

The World of Our Grandpa’s Sayings

My work has been created over a 20+ year period and I want to write an ‘Artwork Focus’ each month to highlight certain pieces of my work to break down why and how the pieces where created.

The first ‘Artwork FocusA Stitch in Time, Saves Nine’ by Laura Elliott.

This clock was premiered at Flux Exhibition at The Royal College of Art and subsequently at the Menier Gallery – Exhibit Here.

About the clock:

“This piece is inspired by my great-grandfather who always had a saying for all areas of life and is titled after one of his sayings “A Stitch in Time, Saves Nine”. I have heard them growing up as they where used by my whole family. I see each saying as an idea and concept and this was the basis for this clock, with the saying relating to the fact the design was a clock, something I had fun with.

This clock features 227 carats of the genuine semi-precious gemstone called Labradorite. Labradorite can display an iridescent optical effect (or schiller) known as labradorescence. The term labradoresence was coined by Ove Balthasar Bøggild. The image below is a rough sample showing how Labradoresence appears when a good quality Labradorite is polished:

It was due to my life-long passion of clay and sculpture as to why I expanded my work in 2012 to include the exciting medium of silver, copper and bronze metal clay; in concert with my ‘Landscape Moods’ series of mixed media paintings. Metal clay allows me to sculpt work in a free form and expressive manner, allowing me to create a wide range of sculptural metal clay designs and this has been titled the ‘Landscape Gems’ collection. I view these designs as a mini ‘Landscape Moods’ painting which is in a solid metal design that can be worn everyday.”

‘A Stitch in Time, Saves Nine’ by Laura Elliott will be exhibited at The Menier Gallery, London: 18th – 23rd July 2016
