• Exhibition Focus: Chanelling My Inner Picasso For My First Group Sculpture Exhibition 1995

“This exhibition was my first exhibition that included the public who walked a sculpture trail featuring work of all mediums and subjects. I always gravitated to creative and imaginative projects and this included play at home and lessons at school. When I reached the age of 13, I found two mediums which I still adore to work with to this day: clay and paint.

When I moved into my late teens, I found painting a solace, with music and emotion impacting on the subject matter, colour palette and how I painted each piece. During these years, I explored how to integrate paint into 3D mediums such as clay, plaster of paris or card sculptures.

It was during the summer of 1995 that I was to create a sculpture for a group exhibition sculpture trail. I wanted to include my love of the artist master Pablo Picasso. He used paint, card, string, newspaper and many other mediums to create work, which inspired me. I, therefore, decided to use the idea of slotted card, decorated with acrylic paint to build up a sculpture.

Above: The sculpture I created was a Picasso lizard

The process of creating the sculpture comprised of decorating individual pieces of card each with a slot cut into them. The cards where simply painted with bright abstract designs; however, the way I constructed the final sculpture is almost like a jigsaw, with each piece of card slotting together. This project was unique and I have never created anything like it since then.

The final piece was:

 6 foot long x 4 foot wide x 1.5 high

The final sculpture is shown below at the exhibition:
