This exhibition is a fascinating focus on both Picasso and his models/ sitters. He has been my artist who fires my life-time of work. I find it refreshing how the exhibition highlights the sitters. I have always believed that the life models add a unique influence of the mood/ style of all artworks created, whether it is sketches or a final painting or sculpture. As an artist, I have attended life drawing sessions since I was 18 and is a practice I still enjoy to this day. I have always felt that each portrait, no matter the period it was created in, expresses the essence of the sitter which has been translated by Picasso.
My Own Top 3 Favourite Picasso Portrait Artworks:
1) My first natural choice that has always been one of the first Picasso artworks that come to mind is titled “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon”:
2) My number two choice is the piece below titled “Girl with Mandolin”, featuring soft and warm colour tones, which heightens the atmosphere of soft sensuality of the sitter and possibly the influence of music on the artist.
3) The painting below represents the multi faceted aspects of partnership and passion.
Write-up about the exhibition:
“Picasso: The Artist and His Models explores the career of multifaceted artist Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881–1973) between 1906 and the mid-1960s. At the core of this exhibition is an exploration of Picasso’s extraordinary ability to translate three dimensions into two-dimensional evocations. His countless models, which naturally included his friends and his lovers, also comprised mundane objects whose shapes and interrelations intrigued him. Throughout his work, the artist engaged with other important archetypes from literature, music, theater, fashion, and popular culture, as well as history and art. His close personal relationships with many of his subjects allowed him to distill their energy and infuse it into works of art across various mediums.
This presentation features significant paintings, sculptures, drawings, and prints by Picasso from the Albright-Knox’s collection. Additional iconic paintings by the artist, which have been carefully selected from museums in both Europe and the United States, will draw connections between the conceptual and stylistic developments of his work. ”
