Feedback From Commission:

Type: Painting Commission

Location: New York, USA

“I recently purchased a beautiful piece of art from Laura Elliott. Not only was the piece exactly what I wanted, but Laura handled the whole transaction very flawlessly. I was looking around for something colourful and luckily stumbled upon this website. I saw something I loved but when inquired about purchasing it, Laura told me it was already sold. That certainly didn’t stop the search and Laura quickly responded saying she could paint one like that if I was interested and I could even choose the colours.

The next few interactions with Laura involved choosing colours and getting a proof of the painting before I had to commit. Paying was very simple through Pay Pal and we managed to come to a financial arrangement that fitted my budget. The painting was couriered as soon as my payment had gone through and it arrived within a few days. The whole transaction was dealt with very professionally and was very simple. Laura is an enthusiastic and energetic artist who has a passion for what she does. I could feel this through the friendly and personal e-mails we exchanged while she was painting my special piece.

Thank you Laura.”

• Exhibition Focus: The Link Gallery ‘International Women’s Day’ ~ 7th-28th March 2017

The Link Gallery is hosting a collaborative exhibition celebrating, inspired by and reflecting on International Women’s Day 2016.

This exhibition will run 7th – 28th March 2017 and is open to the public free of charge.

About my featured artworks:

Artwork One: ‘Shedding Punk’d Viper'(below)

“Shedding Punk’d Viper is a play on the combination of punk art and abstraction. This painting injects a soft, feminine touch into a hard, undefined and often aggressive area such as punk art. Each sweep of fluorescent and bright colours further develops punk and abstraction into a women’s realm.”

Artwork Two: ‘Spotty Punk’d Panther’ (below)

“‘Spotty Punk’d Panther’ is a true counterpoint to the painting exhibited along side ‘Shedding Punk’d Viper’. This painting features a soft, yet abstract, bouquet of pink, aqua blue and purples coupled with sand, gloss and metallic effects. This painting injects a truely feminine side into a hard, undefined and often aggressive area such as punk art.”

Biography:

“It is from a life-time of creativity which culminated in Laura’s achievement of an Art and Media Bachelor of Arts with Honors in 2008. This multi disciplined degree expanded both her practical skill set and academic thought processes. Each painting in this series, started in 2002, has been driven forward by further exploring abstract expressionism, with a feminine touch. These artworks are continually influenced by her thought processes, emotions and mood at the time of creation. This free expression enables Laura to explore such techniques from a female perspective.”

About the Link Gallery:

“Since its opening in 2001 the Link Gallery has held a continual programme of exhibitions by a wide variety of established and emerging local and regional artists, including solo and group shows, community projects and annual exhibitions. Admittance is free of charge and the gallery is open to the public all year round.

The Link Gallery is in the West Downs Center, in a space that was created as a result of the transformation of the West Downs Preparatory School into the West Downs Performing Arts and Conference Center, which was opened by Lord Putnam in 2001. With the recent development of a purpose-built Arts Center on the King Alfred Campus, West Downs has now become home to the University of Winchesters Business School.”

• Artwork Focus: The Duality & Contradictions of Femininity & Masculinity In Art?

The Duality & Contradictions of Femininity & Masculinity In Art?

It was when I was selecting my work for inclusion of the exhibition at The Link Gallery, Winchester for ‘International Women’s Day’ 7th-28th March 2017 that made me sit back and think about gender identity in my work. I feel that colours in everyday products are selected according to the gender targeted, for example pink for girls or blue for boys. This is mostly noticeable in toys.

To chose my work, I found it useful to review the dictionary definitions of masculine and feminine:

Definition of Masculine:

Adjective

  •  Having qualities or appearance traditionally associated with men.
  • Of or denoting a gender of nouns and adjectives, conventionally regarded as male.

Noun

  • The male sex or gender.”

Definition of Feminine:
Adjective

  • Having qualities or an appearance traditionally associated with women, especially delicacy and prettiness.
  • Of or denoting a gender of nouns and adjectives, conventionally regarded as female.

Noun

  • The female sex or gender.
  • A feminine word or form.”

Disability is unique to everyone. This is no more so than with me.

This is a subject close to my heart, as I have struggled for decades with physical and mental health issues.

My art has always been an open representation of my inner self and it has reflected into the choice of colour, style and subject matter in my ‘Landscape Moods Collection’ mixed media paintings, started in 2002. I have created work from my heart from the age of 17, which has presented my life in my art, in all mediums I have explored and studied.

Why did you put the word ‘Moods’ this collection the title of ‘landscape moods’?

Above: ‘ Torn’- The first in the ‘Landscape Moods Collection’

The title of this collection took me some time to consider, debate and decide upon. The title needed to be self-explanatory, clear and short. I never wanted the title to be an essay, just two words and I chose the two words that epitomises my mixed media painting collection: ‘landscape‘ and ‘moods‘.

The title can be broken down into two concepts. The first was the subject matter, which is ‘landscapes’, and the second is the motivation or inspiration of my work, which is the word ‘moods’. My work is filled with complex meanings; however, I wanted to express who I am, my core personality.

What do you see in the close-up images of my artworks below?

Are your artworks truely representing gender diversion?

I don’t think so. You could interpret my work so, but a saying my Grandpa told me stays true:

“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”

How do you explain or write about each of your artworks?

I must say that it is hard to explain my work as they are true expressions that are always unplanned and from my subconcious. The only two aspects I plan are the type of canvas or paper and a rough selection of colours. I know that the colour schemes, such as fuschia pink, can intimate gender identity; however, I believe that colours do not have a set or defined gender meaning. Saying this, certain colours suit specific galleries and exhibitions and, therefore, gender identity or meanings play an important role in the selection of my work.

Above: ‘Counterpoint Study’ Detail

It is when I am required to write about my work that I interpret my paintings and then pull out meanings I see, but this is subjective, as is all art.
Below are two write-ups for an exhibition at The Link Gallery, Winchester for ‘International Women’s Day’ 7th-28th March 2017:

A little bit more about my work in 2017: Biography

It is from a life-time of creativity which culminated in Laura’s achievement of an Art and Media Batchelor of Arts with Honours in 2008. This multi disciplined degree expanded both her practicle skillset and academic thought processes. Each painting in this series, started in 2002, has been driven forward by further exploring abstract expressionism, with a feminine touch.

These artworks at the Link Gallery are continually influenced by her thought processes, emotions and mood at the time of creation. This free expression enables Laura to explore such techniques from a female perspective.

The two paintings selected in this blog, ‘Shedding Punk’d Viper’ and ‘Spotty Punk’d Panther demonstrate a true counterpoint to the painting titled ‘Spotty Punk’d Panther’.
